Southampton remain just one place above the relegation zone on goal difference after their recent 1-1 draw at home to Watford in what has been a massively disappointing season so far for the club.
The Saints are yet to win at St. Mary’s this campaign, putting into perspective how bad things have been, and manager Mark Hughes’ future at the club will now only continue to come into question until things get better.
Hughes, of course, was able to steer Southampton away from relegation last term after succeeding Mauricio Pellegrino, but performances overall under the Welshman have not been good enough and there are no current signs to suggest that is going to change.
Hughes looks incapable of turning his side’s fortunes around and, all in all, is a coach who has been on the decline for some time now.
The 55-year-old was arguably once one of the most astute coaches in the division outside of the Premier League top four, which earned him the Manchester City job back in 2008.
And while that did not go to plan for Hughes, he showed his credentials further when he joined Stoke and completely transformed the way the team played.
However, it has all been downhill for Hughes since his last season at the Potters where he was sacked and, if his current tenure as Southampton boss is anything to go by, it looks like things are only set to get worse.
