The Southampton fans in and around the Transfer Tavern are really hoping soon that the club starts recruiting some new talent so a disastrous campaign like last time out will not happen again.
Saints won’t like to be reminded of the fact that they were 3 points away from the drop last season and if they delayed the sacking of Mauricio Pellegrino any longer, it really could have been curtains for Southampton. Their striking problems have been significant for the last couple of seasons now and if they’re to finally address that, our punters say that taking a risk on Daniel Sturridge, (who is valued at £13.5 million on Transfermarkt) could pay off well, should he stay fit.
Staying fit is the ultimate problem for English forward Sturridge, who has had a lot of time on the pitch disrupted by injuries. When moving to West Brom in January with the opportunity to show he was eager to play and be a part of the team for the Baggies, not once did he play a full 90 minutes due to the injury problems he endured.
Southampton, on the other hand, were saved by Manolo Gabbiadini, who scored that vital goal against Swansea to keep them in the Premier League. Ironically though, the Italian had been out of sorts for pretty much the whole season, Charlie Austin has similarly sustained injuries and Shane Long only managed 2 league goals last season. Therefore, although a risk on an injury-prone striker like Daniel Sturridge could be costly, his goal-scoring ability could be found once again with a move to Southampton.
