It has long been thought that Sir Alex Ferguson would eventually make his move to bring Robert Lewandowski to Old Trafford.
Ferguson has made no secret of his admiration for the Polish striker, who has had a fantastic last eighteen months of so. Lewandowski was a central influence in Borussia Dortmund’s first ever double winning side last year, netting 30 times as Dortmund dominated proceedings in Germany.
He then impressed for co-hosts Poland at Euro 2012 earlier this summer, scoring the tournament’s opening goal against Greece. And Lewandowski has continued his form into the early stages of this season, scoring most recently against Hannover 96 last weekend as Dortmund once again look a strong outfit.
All this has seen the 24 year old’s stardom continue to grow, so there should be no surprise that interest is thought to be high. Lewandowski offers versatility, primarily he is a striker but he can also play out wide, and has scored goals at every club he has played for. His unpredictable nature make him extremely tough to play against, and he is more than capable of switching the Bundesliga for the Premier League.
With Nani’s career at Old Trafford seemingly stalling, a gap in the squad could soon emerge that Ferguson will need filling, and Lewandowski would represent the ideal replacement. He should adapt to the English game fairly quickly as the German league is played at a fairly similar pace to ours, and it doesn’t usually take too long for players transferred from the Bundesliga to settle in the Premier League, Podolski being a prime example. But Man United may have to move quick, and be persuasive, with Juventus now on the prowl.
Juventus are an attractive prospect right now. The Turin side have maintained last season’s momentum and extended their unbeaten domestic run to an astounding 46 games. Remarkably, their last defeat in Serie A was on the 15th May 2011 when they were defeated at Parma. Juventus have also made promising strides in the Champions League so far, a creditable draw at Stamford Bridge in their opening group game underlined the fact that they are once again one of Europe’s big name football clubs.
The one area they are lacking is up front, especially with the departure of veteran Del Piero this summer and with the loan signing of Nicklas Bendtner being the only summer arrival from an offensive point of view, Lewandowski offers a logical solution.
Should the future of Robert Lewandowski become a battle between Man United and Juventus, there can be no foregone conclusions that Old Trafford is the better option as Juventus have lots to offer the Polish striker. With Lewandowski’s contract due up at the end of next season, this is a battle that could be well worth keeping an eye on.
