Kante secured: Chelsea must now agree fresh terms with Olivier Giroud

Last Friday, Chelsea announced that midfielder N’Golo Kante had agreed fresh terms with the Blues. It was huge news for the club, given just how important Kante is to everything that Maurizio Sarri does.

Despite shifting to more of a box-to-box role, Kante has retained his significance under the new manager, and he’s only going to get better at Stamford Bridge.

There’s no time for the Chelsea brass to rest, though. Instead, the Blues must look to agree terms with another player, and an ideal candidate is Olivier Giroud.

Giroud, who is rated at £16.2 million by Transfer Markt, is an important player for Chelsea. Since moving from Arsenal last year, he’s rotated regularly with Alvaro Morata, but more often than not, the Frenchman has looked more useful for his team.

Strong, aerially dominant and surprisingly technical, Giroud is unusual in that he’s a bit of a jack of all trades. He’s agile and good with the ball at his feet, but he’s also able to pull off a wonderful strike or get the ball out of the air with a great touch.

He’s not the most lethal goalscorer, but the World Cup winner more than makes up for that with his link-up play. He’s fantastic at bringing play together, and whilst that means he doesn’t always get the glory, it does mean that he’s always playing a role on the pitch.

His current contract at Chelsea expires at the end of the season, and it makes little sense for the Blues not to renew it. He’s still got a role to play under Sarri.
