Former Liverpool left-back, John Arne Riise is being linked with a surprise return to Anfield, as Kenny Dalglish looks to further stamp his mark on the unconvincing squad he inherited.
Having shipped out the inadequate Paul Konchesky to Championship outfit, Nottingham Forest, King Kenny is looking to bolster his options in defence, and it seems that the 30-year-old Riise, who is currently in Italy with Roma, could prove a useful summer signing.
Having spent 7 years with the Reds from 2001 to 2008, Riise was a first-team regular, famous for his powerful shots and free kicks, before he left for a new challenge in Rome. With Fabio Aurelio yet to convince Dalglish of his abilities, the experience of 2005 Champions League winner Riise, as well as his desire to return, may see the Norwegian reclaim the left-back slot he held for many years.
Riise is also thought to be considering following in the footsteps of Thierry Henry, David Beckham and Freddie Ljungberg, with a lucrative move to the United States. The MLS regularly attracts star names towards the end of their careers, and the increasing popularity of ‘soccer’ in America has allowed big wages to be paid to marquee players. Although Riise does not command the adulation of the likes of Beckham or Henry, as a successful European player, he can expect to be well-treated should he choose the American option.
