Tottenham Hotspur: Kevin Phillips tips Spurs to strike loan deal over Danny Rose to Middlesbrough before deadline

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips has tipped Tottenham to loan out Danny Rose to Middlesbrough in a last-minute deal.

Can Spurs loan out Rose before the EFL window shuts?

Rose, who has been omitted by manager Jose Mourinho, duly missing out on a place in Spurs’ Europa League and Premier League squads, is now being tipped with a temporary Championship move before his contract expires next year.

Rose on the move?

The Englishman is an established international, having amassed 29 caps for his country, and featured regularly under Mauricio Pochettino during the club’s run to the 2019 Champions League final.

Now, with his status under Mourinho in doubt, Phillips believes that the defender’s future lies in a loan switch to ‘Boro, but Tottenham may have to pay a portion of his £60,000-a-week salary to make a last-gasp deal happen.

Claiming the ‘writing is on the wall’ for Rose, with time running out to secure a move with the EFL deadline quickly looming, but Phillips believes that Tottenham can strike a deal and has suggested the club pay a ’50/50′ split of his salary.

Phillips issues verdict

The ex-England international claims it is ‘more than likely’ and a move may be the best thing for all parties, especially as Spurs recently signed Spanish international Sergio Reguilon in a £25m deal.

“I think Spurs would more than likely have to pay a chunk of his wages if he is to leave and it would not surprise me if that happens,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“If you have not been given a squad number then the writing is on the wall.

“No club is going to take him and pay his full wages. Certainly not a club like Boro who have not started particularly well in the Championship. There is no way they would bring him in and pay his whole wages.

“I am sure a deal will get struck where it is a 75/25 per cent split, or even a 50/50 split between the two clubs.

“Spurs will just want to get him away from the club. I like Danny Rose but for the player and the club a move away is best.”

Transfer Tavern take

Hailed as ‘quality’ by Pochettino, the 30-year-old needs to find game-time, especially since the rearranged European Championships take place next summer.

Alasdair Gold also believes that, if the club cannot secure a move by January at the latest, Spurs may mutually terminate Rose’s contract.
