Harry Redknapp must be weighing up his options after his number 1 target Loic Remy rejected the prospect of joining Tottenham.
The Spurs boss was in France on Sunday evening where he paid a visit to the Stade Velodrome to watch Loic Remy score both goals in Marseille’s 2-0 victory over Lille. Redknapp has admired the Frenchman for some time and made the 25-year-old his priority in the January transfer window as he looks to bolster his attack to maintain Spurs title challenge.
On Sunday morning Redknapp was quoted as saying, “I have heard good reports about him so I thought I would have a look at him.
“I made enquiries about him around 18-months or two years ago, so I thought I would have a look at him.
“I don’t know whether we can sign him, but I need to keep trying.”
Remy stole the show against Lille on Sunday but the striker was unaware of Redknapp’s presence at the game. In a post-match interview Remy was quizzed over his future but insisted he won’t be going anywhere.
“I’m staying. I will 100 per cent stay at Marseille until the end of the season and even the end of my contract,” said Remy.
“I have spoken with the president and the staff. And it would not be right for me to leave this club.
“We’ll see next summer but that’s not even in my head for now.
“(Marseille substitute) Jean-Philippe Sabo told me (Redknapp was in the stands), but frankly it was not a burden for me because I only found out after the game.
“Anyway, even if it’s good that some clubs have an interest in me, I agree with my bosses not to pay the slightest attention to it until June. We will ask questions after the end of the championship.
“It is also a mark of respect to the fans not to talk about leaving during the transfer window. They count on me. I still have to progress a lot here.”
Remy’s unavailability really ought to get Redknapp to turn his head to an alternate option – Klaas Jan Huntelaar. The 28-year-old striker has been in phenomenal form for Schalke in the first-half of the Bundesliga season scoring 26 goals in 27 games.
Huntelaar appears to have found his groove at the German club after disappointing spells with European heavyweights Real Madrid and AC Milan. The Dutch International is just 1 goal away from equalling his overall tally from last season and his predator-like finishing has led to Redknapp enquiring about his availability.
The on-loan Emmanuel Adebayor has spearheaded Tottenham’s attack this season but Redknapp is desperate to add some additional firepower to aid his sides title charge. An offer in the region of £17.5m may be enough to tempt Schalke to part company with their goal-machine.
