The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have had a tough few weeks…
After starting the season on fire, Jurgen Klopp’s side have really come off the rails since the turn of the year. Struggling past the post in the opening two months of the season, the Reds desperately need to turn their season around – and they certainly showed the makings of a side on the up against Arsenal over the weekend.
Ending the game as 3-1 winners, the result was never in doubt for Klopp’s men.
However, for many in the Transfer Tavern, this season is already over with – with Liverpool now too far off the pace to challenge Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table. Too many bad results have, seemingly, cost the Reds – and a few of the Liverpool fans in the pub are hoping that their manager is already looking towards next season.
It would certainly seem as though that is the case, with the Mirror reporting that Liverpool have ramped up their chase for 19-year-old goalkeeper Alex Meret.
Currently on loan for Serie B side SPAL from Udinese, Meret has seriously impressed this season – and a host of clubs, including Liverpool, are reportedly keen.
Pursuing a new goalkeeper certainly makes sense for Liverpool, with neither Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius really impressing so far this season.
Karius started the season as first-choice, but did very little to warrant the faith from Klopp, and he has subsequently been shifted back to the bench regularly this season. Conversely, Mignolet has looked slightly better than he has over the past few years, but the mistake-prone Belgian is certainly not a long-term solution – so Klopp needs to act.
Meret, meanwhile, has been a regular for his side – having made 20 appearances in all competitions so far.
