The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were just happy to return to winning ways over the course of the weekend. Indeed, while problems are still so obviously afoot for Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, it’s nice to see some points back on the board. 

Having smashed Huddersfield 3-0 on Saturday, our resident Reds are hoping the side can carry on their momentum into this week’s Champions League tie, at home to Maribor. Only a couple of weeks ago did Klopp’s men thump the Slovenian side 0- 7, so it’s fair to say our local Kopites are pretty confident.

Still, there were some issues that came up against the Terriers that need to be fixed ahead of a must-win game on Merseyside on Wednesday evening. Though Liverpool are clearly strong favourites, a slip up here would be a nightmare for Klopp, who needs a strong showing in the Champions League this season.

With that in mind, here are TWO key issues Liverpool must sort out ahead of Maribor tie.

Breaking down

Much was made about Liverpool’s wonderful frontline prior to the start of the season, though it relies on pace. When defences are deep, the likes of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge struggle to create much in front of them.

That was evident against Huddersfield and, while they ultimately scored three goals, the first-half showed just how lacklustre Liverpool can be against a defensive team.

Defensive shape

It seems rather obvious to say that Liverpool need to sort out their defence, though Klopp must figure out whether or not he’s going to keep Joe Gomez in a back three. Indeed, the 20-year-old looked relatively assured in the role there on Saturday and could help pad out the rearguard, though risking him in a must-win game could prove costly.

Does he put his faith in the youngster to try and sort out his problem? Or continue with a flat back four, one that has let him down constantly. Seems like an obvious choice, though the wrong one could have serious implications.
