The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted when their side managed to beat Huddersfield over the weekend. It has been a very difficult few weeks for the Reds, with Jurgen Klopp’s men struggling to gain a head of steam in the English top flight. Fortunately, a 3-0 victory against the Terriers has really improved the mood in the Liverpool camp in the pub.

It was a very good performance from the Reds, but more will be expected of Jurgen Klopp and his team over the coming weeks as they look to overcome this blip. The result was a good start, but another dominant win against Maribor on Wednesday will serve as a real example of their improving form. They managed to dominate the Slovenian outfit when the two sides last met, with a 7-o victory sending a message to their rivals, and the Reds in the pub are expecting a repeat performance this time out.

Their performance at the weekend will have cemented a few players in Klopp’s mind as he looks to secure his best team, and he’ll no doubt be looking to retain them on Wednesday, too.

Joe Gomez

Joe Gomez impressed over the weekend, to the surprise of nobody in the Transfer Tavern.

He has been a solid option for the Reds for much of his tenure so far, though he has been limited to a role on the flanks typically when he has been selected, despite the fact that he is more comfortable in the centre.

That said, playing slightly out of position didn’t seem to affect him at the weekend, with the Englishman looking very impressive for his club as his defence rallied and kept a clean sheet.

He is going from strength to strength, and he simply has to play.

James Milner

James Milner is such a consistent performer, it’s a wonder why it took him so long to earn his place in the Liverpool first team this season.

Now that he has earnt it, though, he isn’t going to give it up without a fight. Wherever he plays, be it in midfield or defence, he generally looks very good indeed – with consistent performances helping to secure the Reds defensively.

Against Maribor, he could find a role in any number of positions, but when you consider his quality and experience on this sort of stage, the fact is he simply has to play – no matter the position.
