The Chelsea fans here in the Transfer Tavern are happy to finally see some new faces in the squad and hopefully some much needed back up to the current first team.

Chelsea have been in dire need of strength in depth this season, as they looked to struggle in parts of the first half of the campaign under Antonio Conte. The Italian cut a disappointed figure after the summer window, with Chelsea missing out on many targets, much to the annoyance of the regular Blues in the bar.

Things looked like they were following the same pattern in this past window also, however, two deadline day deals have upped the morale among the group of supporters that often pop in for a pint. Indeed, the purchase of Olivier Giroud is a sweeter one to have got in due to him being from their North London rivals Arsenal.

Chelsea look a shoe-in to claim a Champions League spot but the arrival of three new faces should more than secure it. With that in mind, our landlord took some time out this week to have a closer look at the three in mind and see how they will aid the Blues top-four quest…

Emerson Palmieri

The former Roma fullback is a much-needed reinforcement for regular starter Marcus Alonso, they left wing-back has been ever-present this season in the Blues starting line up and along with a few others needs to be rested.

With the transfer of Palmieri, Conte now has two quality players in the role and can start to rest up key players as he has had to make do for much of the season so far. Alonso is one of the highest scoring defenders in the league this season and a little rest at key times can only see him improve.

Ross Barkley

After what was a bizarre final day twist in the summer, Barkley has finally made his move from his boyhood club Everton to Chelsea. The midfielder offers something a little different in the centre of the park to what Conte already has and given the opportunity could be a regular starter for the Blues.

With him coming in, again it gives the other midfielders the chance to rest or if injury/suspensions happen and Conte knows he has more than a capable replacement.

Olivier Giroud

The super sub of the Emirates has migrated across London to Stamford Bridge, to seemingly playback up to Alvaro Morata. However, Morata seems to suffer from form dips and fatigue quite often already this season while he adjusts to life in England.

The Frenchman is on hand to jump in his spot and with his Premier League pedigree will be an upgrade to the departed Michy Batshuayi.
