EFL League One Record Transfers

League One has produced many top players over the years, as teams usually directly sell to top Premier League clubs before they make it to the big stage. In the past two decades a lot has changed for many clubs, and they have moved away from purely traditional homegrown players by dipping their wallet into the transfer market as a domino effect of the money in football today.

In terms of record transfer arrivals, ten players have now been bought for over £1m, and this began in 2009 when duo Rickie Lambert and Jose Fonte joined Southampton for just over £1m each. Since then, Southampton managed to win promotion through to the top flight, and many other clubs believed these two signings had a great influence on this and therefore decided to follow suit.

Will Grigg is one man who features in the top five record League One signings of all time. First, the centre-forward moved to Wigan in 2015-16 for £1.27m which was a massive fee at the time, though just three seasons later, Grigg moved once again but this time to rivals Sunderland for just over £3m, making him the league’s new record signing by over a million pounds.

Grigg tops the list ahead of right-back John Brayford who joined Sheffield United back in 2014-15 for £2m, and ahead of Britt Assombalonga who moved to Peterborough for £1.7m towards the start of his career in 2013.

As for record sales from League One, millions of pounds have been spent, predominantly by Premier League and Championship clubs. Fabian Delph tops the list as record sale from a League One club, and his record from over ten years ago still stands at £8.55m as he Joined Aston Villa from Leeds United in the 2009-10 season.

Delph was snapped up by the Premier League side at just the age of 19, same for winger Ademola Lookman who caught the eye of Everton in 2016 and joined for just under £8m, making his sale the second-highest in league history. Despite the majority of sales remaining in England, two players were sold for big money to top European clubs in 2018, after Sunderland were relegated to the division. Wahbi Khazri made his move to Ligue 1 side Saint-Étienne for £6.30m, and fellow forwards Fabio Borini joined up with Italian giants AC Milan for £5m.

Famous EFL League One Transfers

One of the most famous transfers in the modern era of League One, was Dele Alli’s £6m move to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2014-15.

The young English attacking midfielder was on the radar of many top-flight clubs including Liverpool; however, the North London club managed to win the signature of the future star who has gone on to make his England debut and play in a Champions League final.
