Leeds United’s managing director, Angus Kinnear, has announced plans for the club to expand Elland Road, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.
It is suggested that the stadium’s capacity will be increased from 37,890 up to around 50,000. The announcement came at a civic reception in the city as the Whites celebrated their 100th birthday since forming in 1919 (via Leeds Live).
In an image shown at the reception (via Leeds Live), it seems that it will be the West Stand which will be extended to match the same capacity as the East Stand.
Speaking about the potential expansion plans, Kinnear said (via Leeds Live): “Part of it is around the stadium and taking our stadium up to 50,000 and turning it into a true ground which can compete with other stadiums in the Premier League and in Europe.”
Kinnear also confirmed that the plans are dependent on the club being promoted to the Premier League, where he believes they could sell out (via Graham Smyth).
They currently sit in fifth place in the Championship after 11 games, picking up 20 points and sitting just two adrift of leaders West Brom (via BBC Sport).
