Leeds United are enjoying their start to the Premier League this campaign as they already have ten points from six games.
However, recent reports suggest that they are not just looking to just stay as they are with their present squad but they are also looking towards the future, as they have been linked with a move for young Sean McGurk.
Danny Mills has given his views on the possible transfer and it looks like he backs the acquisition.
Mills’ comments on the possible transfer
Speaking to Football Insider, the former Leeds player said: “They need him, they need to sign more players.
“Leeds have lacked numbers at the lower levels, from the under-23 and under-18 down.
“They need more players in now that they are a Category One academy so that they can fulfil all of their fixtures and be competitive within those.”
Would McGurk be a good signing for Leeds?
McGurk has not made an appearance for Wigan’s first team but scored twice in his four FA Youth Cup appearances last term (Transfermarkt). He is only 17, but the fact that the club are looking towards their future is very good and the player has received a lot of praise in the past.
His U18 manager at the Latics said, “Sean was brilliant, he’s been amazing. He had a slow start to his scholarship with an injury in the summer but, since he’s been fit, he’s got himself into the team and stayed there.
“He’s so effective in games, he sets things up, he scores goals and he’ll always do that because of his ability.”
He is also in the final seven months of his contract at the DW Stadium, which is due to expire next summer, so the Premier League side could pick him up on a free transfer, meaning they’d only need to pay a compensatory fee.
Mills seems to believe he would be a very important signing to bolster the Leeds academy, and this makes sense as they recently became a Category One youth set-up.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have found some talent from Wigan recently, with England U18 star Joe Gelhardt signing for Leeds this summer. He is finding some form too, scoring at the weekend against Crystal Palace U23’s to double his tally for the club in his five appearances.
Therefore, the possible acquisition seems like a good idea as there is not too much risk and if McGurk starts shining, it could turn into a great bit of business.
