Despite their 17-match unbeaten run coming to an end when they were beaten 2-1 by Hull City in the second leg of their League Cup semi-final tie on Thursday, Manchester United supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern will be feeling a lot more confident than perhaps they were at the beginning of the season.

Even though they were defeated, the Red Devils went through 3-2 on aggregate and they will now face Premier League rivals Southampton in the final at Wembley next month.

In the final of one cup competition, back in contention for a Champions League spot in the top flight and through to the knockout stages of the Europa League, things are going well for manager Jose Mourinho and the fans standing at the bar – although there are still some members of the United squad many will say aren’t good enough to be donning the famous red strip if you speak to the United fans standing at the bar.

Marouane Fellaini

The midfielder was a bit of a controversial buy at the time when he joined from Everton for £27.5m in 2013, and he still seems to divide opinion among United supporters now – although the majority in the tavern aren’t fans.

While he has shown he can be useful at times during his three-and-a-half years with the Red Devils – especially with his height in both penalty areas – the Belgian has a silly mistake in him too – the landlord will remember the last-gasp penalty he gave away against Everton at Goodison Park earlier this term.

It is a surprise to some that he still gets as many first team minutes as he does under Jose Mourinho, but surely his exit from Old Trafford will finally be confirmed in the summer – the United fans standing at the bar may well breathe a sigh of relief if that does happen.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Despite making 31 appearances in all competitions for United last season, Jose Mourinho decided that the German midfielder wasn’t going to be part of his first team plans this term during the summer – again, this was a decision that might have divided opinion in the tavern.

The 32-year-old found himself training with the Under-23 side and it was strange how the club weren’t willing to let him leave then, although perhaps they have been vindicated by the fact Schweinsteiger has in fact made two appearances despite Mourinho’s comments last year.

Even though the January transfer window is just days from shutting, he is still a Red Devils player but if he isn’t going to play, then letting him join another team would surely be best for both parties – the landlord believes if he isn’t part of Mourinho’s first team plans then the two must go their separate ways.

Ashley Young

Despite proving to be a useful and versatile player since joining United from Aston Villa in 2011, Young has never really hit the heights that might have been expected of him on his move to Old Trafford – the fans standing at the bar will have been disappointed at his overall performance.

The winger has often found himself played out of position at right-back – a regular occurrence in his 10 appearances under Jose Mourinho this term – instead of in his natural position on the wing, and at 31 years of age there is little to no chance that he will be part of the Portuguese manager’s future plans.

The wide man has been linked with a move to the Chinese Super League already during the January transfer window, with Premier League sides West Ham United, Swansea City and Watford all also said to be keen on a loan move for Young, and it appears to be only a matter of time before he makes his exit – the landlord would certainly see a younger player given a chance over him right now.
