TalkSport declare Dries Mertens is set to pen a lucrative new deal with Napoli, ending speculation of a move to the Premier League where Liverpool and Southampton are keen on his services.
The Belgian international’s name was sprawled across the gossip pages over the summer, with Liverpool and Southampton both making enquiries for the player– but a deal was never close to completion for either side.
Now, 28-year-old Mertens is set to extend his current deal, that expires in 2018, with his agent flying to Italy to discuss terms with Napoli; who will give the player a pay-rise as they chase a Serie A title, with defending champions Juventus enduring a nightmare star.
Mertens excelled in Napoli’s season last term, which ended in heartbreak as the club missed out on Champions League football after the final game, where he scored nine goals and provided ten assists to his team.
