Liverpool eye “complete” Barcelona star after Manchester City setback

Share

Liverpool suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, leaving Andoni Iraola with plenty to consider as he looks to keep his side competitive in the Premier League.

The result will raise further questions about the Reds’ squad depth and whether additional reinforcements will be needed in the coming transfer windows.

With Liverpool looking to strengthen their options for the future, a highly rated Barcelona midfielder has emerged as a potential target.

Liverpool Interested in Signing Marc Bernal

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Barcelona midfielder Marc Bernal as they consider a possible move in 2027.

The 19-year-old is regarded as a promising talent, but competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield could affect his long-term future at the Catalan club. Liverpool are reportedly monitoring his situation and could look to take advantage if he becomes frustrated with his opportunities under Hansi Flick.

Bernal – once described as “complete” by former Barcelona player Jose Mari Bakero – faces competition from established midfielders including Pedri, Gavi and Frenkie de Jong, making regular first-team football difficult to guarantee. His involvement over the remainder of the season could therefore prove important in determining whether he stays at the Camp Nou or considers a move elsewhere.

The report also identifies Atletico Madrid as another club interested in the youngster, meaning Liverpool could face competition if they decide to pursue a deal.

Bernal’s playing style could appeal to Iraola, with the midfielder capable of operating in a deeper role, winning possession and helping his team build attacks from the back. Those qualities could make him an attractive long-term addition to Liverpool’s midfield.

However, a deal would not be straightforward. Barcelona are reportedly reluctant to sell the teenager, whose contract runs until 2029. The Spanish club are keen to retain him, meaning a potential departure could depend on Bernal himself deciding that a move would offer better opportunities.

Liverpool’s interest remains at the monitoring stage, with no formal bid reported. Nevertheless, the Reds will be watching his development closely as they consider their future recruitment plans.

Following the defeat to Manchester City, strengthening the squad could become an important consideration for Liverpool. Whether Bernal ultimately becomes a realistic target may depend on his playing time at Barcelona over the coming months.
