Joel Matip has been more than a little bit unlucky in his time at Liverpool. The Cameroonian international made his debut for the club two years ago today but a number of injuries have halted his progress at the club, meanwhile, Virgil van Dijk has come in and taken over as the number one defender.

In his first season, Matip strung together quite a few appearances for the club before suffering a malleolar injury that kept him out for around a month, however, his second season at the club was much worse. The big central-defender turned out to be surprisingly soft when he found himself in the treatment room with separate thigh and hamstring problems as he missed over 20 games for The Reds.
This season he will be hoping can be a different one. If he returns to fitness he will be well placed to try and get back into the first team and take the place of the likes of Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren to partner van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s back four. Things are always easier when you’ve got a commanding partner next to you and if he can keep his fitness up and get back into the side there’s no reason he can’t succeed at Anfield.

The supporters are sick and tired of Matip’s injury issues and they’ll be keen for him to get fit and give them a reminder of what he’s capable of.
