Liverpool fans on Twitter are loving their options at the back as Lovren hits form

Prior to the 2018 January transfer window, Liverpool were more than just a little bit suspect at the back. However, Jurgen Klopp fixed that when he signed Virgil van Dijk, as the Dutchman improved the levels of those around him, with Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren benefitting as they now fight it out with each other for the role of VVD’s defensive partner.

Lovren is a player who gets unfairly criticised at times. The Croatian centre-back has shown that he is more than able to cut it at the top level, and 2018 has been his best year yet as he’s reached both the World Cup and Champions League final, albeit with no winners medals to take home. Now, though, it looks like he’s the third choice at Anfield and Gomez has taken his place alongside van Dijk.

Gomez has been sublime this season alongside van Dijk. However, when called upon, Lovren has still been incredible for the club and Klopp will have some real selection issues. The undroppable van Dijk will certainly be keeping his place for the big games, and with the option to shift Gomez to either left or right back, Lovren could find himself playing a few more games at the heart of The Reds defence, especially after yesterday’s display.
