Whilst most Liverpool fans were gutted yesterday when they heard the news that Joe Gomez would start for England against Spain, they’ve changed their tune today after seeing how well he played. The young centre-back played out of his skin during the Three Lions 3-2 win and they’ve been waxing lyrical about him as his sublime form continues.

Gomez surprised a lot of fans at the start of the season when Jurgen Klopp opted to throw him into the mix for their opening Premier League clash with West Ham. However, he stayed in the side on merit after that and has gone from strength to strength alongside Virgil van Dijk at Anfield. last night was different, though, the youngster didn’t have van Dijk next to him and he still shone, looking calm and assured alongside Harry Maguire for his country.
The brilliance of Gomez is that it’s hard to pinpoint a weakness in his game. The defender has got the speed and strength to cope at the highest level and his technical ability is there to match. Both on and off the ball he’s composed and under the tutelage of both Klopp and Gareth Southgate he’s only getting better, with plenty of supporters touting him for big things after his impressive start to the season.
