Plenty of Liverpool fans loved the performance of Joe Gomez during their side’s 1-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
The Reds failed to have a shot on target as they fell to their first defeat since away loss to Napoli in November. Saul Niguez’s fourth-minute strike ensured that the hosts had the advantage going into the second leg of the last-16 tie at Anfield. With a performance that saw a lack of quality in the final third and with no bite in midfield, there was a silver lining from the evening in the form of Gomez.
The England international, who is valued at £31.5m by TransferMarkt, impressed the Kop faithful with his defensive duties, as well as his dominance and composure with the opposition constantly snapping at his heels all evening. The 22-year-old won 10 duels out of 18 attempted, made two interceptions, completed 11 long balls from 15 and had a pass success rate of 86%, as per Sofascore. As a result, supporters applauded Gomez’s efforts with one fan saying that he was the man of the match, while another described him as a monster as he emerges into a top centre-back.
