A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming at James Pearce’s latest update suggesting that Xherdan Shaqiri won’t be replaced this summer.

The Reds have started their Premier League season in impressive fashion, picking up back-to-back wins against Norwich City and Burnley. It means Liverpool are second in the table behind Chelsea on alphabetical order ahead of their mouthwatering clash at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Away from the pitch, Shaqiri is on the verge of joining Ligue 1 club Lyon, bringing an end to three seasons in a Reds shirt.

The hope is that the Swiss will be replaced this summer, in order for Jurgen Klopp to still have plenty of squad depth, but Pearce has claimed on Twitter that that may not be the case. He states that Harvey Elliott’s emergence alleviates the need for a new signing to come in, with the 18-year-old shining at home to Burnley at the weekend.

The journalist outlined: “#LFC have agreed a £9.5 million deal with Lyon for the sale of Xherdan Shaqiri. Good work considering the initial offer earlier this month was just £4 million.

“Not expecting Xherdan Shaqiri to be replaced in this window given the rise of Harvey Elliott. Fellow teenager Kaide Gordon also pencilled in for game time in the domestic cups following his impact in pre-season.”

Liverpool fans unhappy at Pearce update

These Liverpool fans reacted to the news on Twitter, with some taking aim at club owners FSG over their latest apparent act of frugality at the helm.

“How does this make sense? Harvey can’t be Gini’s replacement and Shaq’s replacement at the same time. He needs to be replaced otherwise our squad is going to be thin.“
