Liverpool fans have been reacting to Virgil van Dijk’s statement after finishing second in this year’s Ballon d’Or awards.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi pipped the Dutchman to win his sixth Golden Ball in Paris on Monday.

The Argentina international scored an incredible 51 goals and provided 22 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions during the last campaign, meaning that he was involved in over 70 goals for the Catalan giants.

Pundits and fans believed that Van Dijk was unfortunate not to win the award after creating a phenomenal reputation for himself and setting a new benchmark for defenders last season.

Van Dijk set an impressive record for a run of 50 games without being dribbled past before it was ended by Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe.
