Liverpool secured an important Champions League victory on Wednesday, beating Red Bull Salzburg at Anfield.

However, despite the win, the Reds weren’t at their best on the night, allowing a 3-0 lead to slip as their Austrian opponents pulled it back to 3-3.
Mohamed Salah eventually scored to ensure Liverpool won the game 4-3, but there were still question marks about the side after the game, particularly defensively.
Joe Gomez started the game at centre-back in place of the injured Joel Matip, and with him being the new face in the backline, some Reds fans pointed to his inclusion as the reason why they conceded three goals.
Interestingly, though, the stats suggest that the former Charlton Athletic man actually outperformed Virgil van Dijk on the night. According to WhoScored, Gomez made six tackles, four interceptions and one clearance in the match and earned a rating of 7.60, significantly higher than Van Dijk’s 6.55.
However, despite the stats, some Liverpool supporters were left unconvinced by the England international and feel that he was at fault for a couple of the goals they shipped.
Many of them are hoping that Matip will be available for their Premier League fixture against Leicester City at the weekend.
Here is what some Reds fans had to say about Gomez’s performance against Salzburg on Twitter…
He was terrible today. Stats don’t tell the full story

This just shows how stats are misleading he was ran all over the place hadn’t a clue where to be

He certainly wasn’t as good as your stats indicate, let’s hope Matip is fit for the weekend

Terrible and at fault for all three goals.

Poor performance. Couldn’t read the flight of the ball at all. Matip missed.

Not good enough. Going too high up. No defensive line. Very nervy aerial duels

He was rusty, match fitness and timing was off. Positioning was poor at times, he’s still very good and would get back to his best with a run of matches. Except we’ve got the collosus that is Joel Matip coming back and he’s the joint 2nd best defender in the Premier league atm.
