Liverpool have received a huge transfer boost in their plot to lure Bayern Munich star David Alaba to Merseyside, according to 90min.
Alaba open to Premier League move
The 28-year-old central defender has entered the final year of his contract and will be able to open pre-contract negotiations in January with any interested parties.
Alaba, who has won nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League crowns with the Bavarian giants (TransferMarkt), is a well-respected individual by his teammates, particularly with Joshua Kimmich, who described him as “outstanding” and “one of the best in the world at centre-back” (via Bundesliga).
With this in mind, the Austria international’s time in Germany could be coming to an end, as 90min revealed that Alaba would be open to a move to the Premier League, despite previously telling suitors that playing in England did not interest him.
The report added that Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City were monitoring the Austrian over the summer, with Barcelona and Real Madrid still a possibility. However, the Reds have been heavily linked with Alaba and so his willingness to come to England is a big boost.
Transfer Tavern take
This is huge for Liverpool. Not only would they be able to fill the shoes of the injured Virgil van Dijk with a swoop, but another top-class asset would be bound for Merseyside.
Having already brought in Thiago Alcantara from Bayern over the summer, Alaba could be their second Bavarian acquisition in as little as four months, if a deal can be agreed in January.
Sporting Director Michael Edwards will have to work his magic once more to get this deal over the line. With a weekly salary of £170,000-a-week (via WageIndicator.co.uk), his arrival could jeopardise Rhy Williams and Joe Gomez’s future in the side once Van Dijk returns.
