The agent of Watford winger Ismaila Sarr has claimed that a move to take his client to Liverpool broke down in January.
Sarr off the table; again
The 22-year-old was heavily linked with a transfer to Anfield last summer after he’d fallen to the Championship with the Hornets at the end of last season but a move did not materialise.
Sarr scored a brace against Jurgen Klopp’s side last season during their 3-0 defeat at Vicarage Road, where the Senegalese trickster was the star of the show.
However, fresh details have emerged regarding Liverpool going back in for a second bite of the cherry for Sarr, who currently earns £23k-per-week at Watford.
Thierno Seydi, Sarr’s representative, told Panafricanfootball that a deal was about to be signed “a few days ago”, which suggested that it could have been on Deadline Day.
He added that personal terms had been agreed with the Merseysiders but that Liverpool’s owners FSG were simply not prepared to pay the €40m (£35m) asking price for his client.
Reds’ star Sadio Mane is a huge fan of his compatriot, with Sarr previously crediting him for helping make the transition from France to England, describing him as being “like a big brother” (cited by Goal).
Transfer Tavern Verdict
It would have been a huge shock if this move happened last month, considering the Reds’ lack of finances due to the pandemic.
Last summer, Liverpool opted to go for Diogo Jota – who is currently on the road back to full fitness after picking up a knee injury last December – instead.
After two attempts, we feel like this deal could be completely dead in the water unless something major happens between now until next summer’s transfer window closes as we can’t see Liverpool stumping up £35m for Sarr.
