Liverpool: James Pearce provides update on Duje Caleta-Car

The Athletic journalist James Pearce has provided an update regarding Liverpool’s reported pursuit of Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car.
Caleta-Car off the table
The 24-year-old was linked with a move to Anfield on Sunday, on the back of the Reds’ catastrophic injury crisis. All four of Liverpool’s defensive options are currently ruled out with various injuries.
Caleta-Car has been highlighted as a player that could possibly have made the journey across the English Channel and he has been a regular for Andre Villas-Boas’ side this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions.
However, following the update that Ozan Kabak had passed a medical ahead of his proposed Merseyside move from Bundesliga side Schalke, Pearce does not think that Caleta-Car will be following him into the new training centre at Kirkby.
Responding to a question from a fan on Twitter, Pearce kept it short and sweet when asked if any deal for Caleta-Car is off. He simply replied:
Believe so

Transfer Tavern Verdict
This update certainly makes sense. With a deal for Preston’s Ben Davies seemingly wrapped up as well, it seems unlikely that Liverpool would sign three centre-backs on one day.
The Reds have held firm for most of the window, with it appearing that they would not be dipping into the market. Had they moved earlier, Klopp may have been able to capture Caleta-Car.
That being said, Klopp should be happy with both Davies and Kabak as at worst, both are sensible, low-cost and potentially short term solutions until the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez return from injury.
In other news, Jurgen Klopp happy to let 6 ft 2 Liverpool defender leave despite centre-back issues.
