The Lowdown: Reds setting summer plans?
Currently locked in a tense battle for the Premier League title with Manchester City, the Reds took a major stride on Wednesday evening by beating Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
That precious victory against Pep Guardiola’s former protégé closes the gap to just one point, putting pressure on the Sky Blues as a crunch Eastlands clash looms in April.
However, amid the precarious contract situations of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, with both of their deals set to expire in 2023, Fenway Sports Group and manager Jurgen Klopp may also have one eye on the summer transfer window.
Now, some news has come out of Europe concerning their links to La Liga star Isak.
The Latest: Liverpool officials make Isak demand…
According to Noticias de Gipuzkoa (via SW), the Reds, and by extension FSG, have been told to sign the Sweden forward by Liverpool officials who have scouted him extensively.
Indeed, it is believed the Anfield employees have ‘advised’ his signing to the club, coming as the door opens for Klopp to make a move.
Sociedad are now said to be open to selling Isak if the right bid comes in, promising to entertain ‘important’ offers from ‘big clubs in Europe’.
The Verdict: Get it done?
The 22-year-old, standing out as a key player for Sociedad over 2021/2022, is also attracting interest from other top Premier League sides.
As Liverpool officials advise FSG to make a move, it is clear to see why, with Isak taking more shots at goal per 90 than any Sociedad player whilst also completing the second-most successful take-ons (WhoScored).
While Isak’s goal return so far this season comes nowhere his 17 strikes over 30 La Liga starts last year, the Swede’s previous numbers highlight his real menace when in top-form.
An impressive haul over 2020/2021, Isak has also been called the second-best Scandinavian striker behind superstar Erling Braut Haaland, with Norwegian/Moroccan reporter Jonas Adnan Giæver calling him ‘unplayable at times’ (Twitter).
His physicality is also tailor-made for the Premier League, as explained by ex-Arsenal man Kevin Campbell, who branded the 6 foot 2 frontman ‘big’ and ‘athletic’ (Football Insider).
Taking all of this into account, FSG should at the very least weigh his potential price tag.
