Liverpool: Reds interested in signing Ollie Watkins -Liverpool

Liverpool are interested in signing Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins this summer, according to Goal journalist Neil Jones.

The Lowdown: Klopp eyes up attacking addition

Despite the Reds already having Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino in attack, Jurgen Klopp could look to bring in another top-class addition given the side’s struggles at points last season.

It could be that central backup for Firmino is the most pressing area with Mane and Jota able to play on both wings, and in order to provide more competition for the Brazilian following a below-par season.

The Latest: Liverpool keen on Watkins

According to Jones, Watkins is a potential target for Liverpool, with Pedro Neto another option, but less likely due to a serious knee injury he picked up last term.

The Villa man may have missed out on a place in England’s Euro 2020 squad, but he scored 14 goals and registered five assists in the Premier League in 2020/21.

The Verdict: Shrewd addition by Reds

Watkins may not be on the list of world-class strikers just yet, but he is a hugely effective one, as he showed by scoring a hat-trick against Liverpool last season.

Joe Gomez endured a torrid time in the 7-2 defeat at Villa Park, earning a 5.6 rating from WhoScored and being given the runaround by his countryman, who bagged three excellent finishes as he condemned the Reds to a shocking defeat.

Watkins would be a significant upgrade on Divock Origi – the Belgian played just 182 minutes of league action – providing more goal threat from the bench and allowing Klopp to rotate more without a significant drop-off in quality.
