Liverpool handed major blow ahead of very important run of fixtures

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted with their side’s performance over the weekend. The Reds put in a stellar display against Brighton, with a 5-1 win highlighting the progress that has been made by Klopp’s men over the last few weeks. After a tough spell earlier in the campaign, things are finally looking up for the Reds on the pitch.

However, just as things were beginning to improve, the Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been brought back down the earth with a crashing thud. Jurgen Klopp has provided an update on the fitness of Joel Matip, and unfortunately for the Reds, it’s bad news.

According to Klopp, via the official Liverpool website, Matip will miss Liverpool’s next game against Spartak Moscow on Wednesday, whilst there are also fears that he could be out for an extended period of time – though Klopp appears confident that won’t be the case.

“A month [out injured]? No, I don’t think so. But as always, it’s possible. We have to wait”, Klopp said.

Klopp is refusing to suggest that he will be out for a long time, but he is also unable to confirm that that won’t be the case,  leading to a few concerned faces in the Transfer Tavern. That’s a worry for Liverpool, of course, as Matip has been so important to the team this season.

Providing consistent defensive performances, Matip’s role is crucial, and particularly given how many games are on the horizon over the festive period, his unavailability for more than a few days could have huge repercussions.

Landlord’s Verdict

Liverpool aren’t blessed with defensive depth, and so this will require some creative thinking from Jurgen Klopp.

Even his available defenders, like Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno, have struggled throughout the campaign, and so this is a difficult time to be a Red.
