The Reds have made a fantastic start the season, and having managed to hang on to Coutinho over the summer, the future is looking bright for the Anfield-based side.
Despite their success in the summer market, there is one deal that continues to hang over the heads of those in charge at Liverpool – Emre Can’s contract.
The German’s current deal expires next summer, and he has yet to renew.
Unfortunately, though, an agreement still appears a long way from being found – with the Times reporting that Liverpool will only get his signature on one major condition. Improved terms, seemingly, aren’t enough for the midfielder. Instead, he is said to want a buyout clause to be included in his current deal.
Buyout clauses aren’t all that common in England, despite being commonplace in other leagues.
With the prospect of moving to a bigger club in the future clearly on Can’s mind, it’s no real surprise that he wants the option to be included.
Landlord’s Verdict
Given the Coutinho saga over the summer, it does make sense for Can to want this feature to be included in his contract.
If it is, should he decide to move on and have an interested party, the club cannot stand in his way.
Liverpool may not be happy about it, but it makes far more sense than letting him leave on a free next summer.
