Liverpool reportedly join race for talented defender, £21 million could get the deal done

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are already starting to look towards next season…

After a poor start to 2017, the Reds are largely out of the Premier League title race, with Jurgen Klopp coming under an increasing amount of pressure to ensure that his side performs.

Our landlord is of the opinion that the response to their poor form is somewhat dramatic, especially considering how universally praised Klopp was just a few weeks earlier.

However, the German manager will need to ensure that a title challenge is forthcoming next season if he wants to keep his job, and for that to happen, it is clear that a few new players are needed.

It appears as though that the process of identifying targets has already begun, with Calcio Mercato reporting that Liverpool are keen on a move for Real Madrid defender Danilo.

Rarely a regular in Madrid, the publication are reporting that a fee of around €25 million (£21-22 million) will be required to tempt Los Blancos to sell.

Despite his lack of game time in La Liga, there is no doubting what he would bring to Liverpool’s first team. Clyne has been somewhat unimpressive this season, so he could certainly do a job at right-back. He is an attacking defender, but key traits including passing and tackling would certainly make him a decent fit within the Liverpool defence. He is also able to play at left-back on occasion, a position that has been problematic for the Reds this season.

Klopp will, of course, find it difficult to land Danilo, but a move would certainly make sense – according to our landlord.
