The Liverpool fans leaning by the bar in the Tavern think that the writing has been on the wall for Simon Mignolet for some time.
The experienced Belgian goalkeeper had a dissapointing campaign last season, with his performances marred by inconsistency and mistakes.
Jurgen Klopp chose to act on this over the summer, by bringing in German shotstopper Loris Karius – and the young keeper has impressed so far.
Granted, he hasn’t been free of mistakes either – but the punters in the Tavern are unanimous in their sentiments that he is a far better option the Mignolet.
Migniolet was given a rare opportunity to impress in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, and whilst he performed fairly well – nobody in the Tavern is expecting him to keep his spot in the first team come the weekend. Now, for the first time, the Belgian has fired a warning shot towards Jurgen Klopp as he bids for a return to the Liverpool first team.
According to the Daily Mail, he said: “I don’t want to be a No 2, that’s clear. I want to play”.
He continued: “‘I am not in a situation where I can sit on the bench. I am 28 years old and want to play week in, week out”.
However, Mignolet admitted that he is not thinking of leaving Anfield: “‘I will keep fighting to get my place back. I will never give up because that’s not in my character”.
Our landlord thinks that there are a few mixed signals from Mignolet here. He thinks that if Mignolet doesn’t want to be a number 2, as he stated – then he simply will have to leave the club.
The Liverpool fans think that his career in Merseyside is as good as over. He has played well this season when given a chance, so they do think he could get another opportunity – but Klopp appears stuck in his ways.
The German is looking towards the future, and his eyes – Karius is the future.
