The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were pleased when they heard the news that Dominic Solanke was due to start for the Reds against Stoke City. Signed from Chelsea over the summer, Solanke’s involvement thus far this season has been limited, and so fans were eager to get a look at one of the subject of one of the most talked about deals of the year.
In the end, the game – which Liverpool won 3-0 – was a mixed one for the Englishman. He had a few bright moments, for sure, but he will have been disappointed not to get on the scoresheet. That being said, his display has given fans a reason to be optimistic about the future, with the Englishman clearly possessing a lot of talent.
However, that being said, the future is not now, and our landlord thinks that the Englishman needs to drop back down to the bench this weekend when the Reds take on Brighton. Solanke’s an inexperienced player, and whilst he may now have got his first real taste of first-team action, there are other, more proven players, that would be better suited to a starting berth.
Though Liverpool’s best attack remains unclear, it’s tough to argue that the trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mo Salah wouldn’t be included within that, whilst Adam Lallana will also likely return when fit again. That, unfortunately, leaves little room for Solanke, particularly up front.
Klopp needs to carefully manage him, and whilst he looked okay on Wednesday, he did nothing that someone like Roberto Firmino has been unable to produce this year. He’s clearly talented, but he must wait his turn. The Premier League is not the league in which to risk unproven young players.
