The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern have been growing increasingly concerned at their side’s defence this season. For all of their strengths going forward, the Reds have continually struggled at the back this term, and there haven’t been any signs of improvement in recent weeks.
How Jurgen Klopp should best improve this situation has been a hotly debated topic in the Transfer Tavern lately, with very few solutions readily available for the German. Fortunately, their results have been picking up in recent weeks, and so there is, at least, something to be happy about for the Reds.
Against Brighton over the weekend, Klopp’s men impressed defensively in tough circumstances, and a few players looked particularly good. One such man was Andy Robertson. Rarely used this season, the Scottish defender impressed the fans in the Transfer Tavern, and he has since left them wondering why he hasn’t been a regular all season long.
In truth, it is baffling, to say the least. Alberto Moreno, who has typically manned the left-hand side of the defence this season, has looked incredibly inconsistent. The Spaniard’s time at Anfield has been characterised by poor performances, and that hasn’t changed this term. Poor offensively and hugely careless at the back, Moreno is an accident waiting to happen.
The same cannot be said for Robertson. Over the weekend, he showed everything that Moreno hasn’t this term; composure, skill, solidity and a desire to make things happen.
Against Spartak Moscow, then, there surely must only be one choice for Jurgen Klopp in this position? It’s an important game for the Reds, and Klopp will need to rely on his defenders. With Robertson in the side, surely Liverpool’s attack is more solid?
