Liverpool’s transfer window simply cannot be classed as a total success – here’s why

Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are busy taking stock of what happened in the summer transfer window as they reflect on who signed and left, and who didn’t.

Indeed, going into the window many were of the opinion that the Reds would need to strengthen a fair old bit with them aiming to be in the Champions League groups – something they’ve achieved – as well as their usual domestic engagements.

Looking back on what they managed to do, though, you do get the feeling that it could have been so much more.

Indeed, the general consensus was that, whilst attacking options were needed, it was in defence where the Reds really needed to bolster themselves for this season.

Instead, though, the club signed the likes of Dominic Solanke, Mo Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for this year, Naby Keita for next season, and only one defender – Andrew Robertson.

All seemingly good signings in their own right, of course, but a centre-half and perhaps a new goalkeeper were needed on top of that and the Reds failed in getting both – leaving many wondering just whether their leakiness will hamper them once again this season.

For sure, Virgil van Dijk was the defensive acquisition they wanted but they bodged that up royally whilst they’ve also let Mamadou Sakho go to Crystal Palace and now it remains to be seen if their refusal to go for any other defender comes back to haunt them.

Thoughts, Liverpool fans? Let us know below!
