Local lad scouted: Rivals Aston Villa & Birmingham could face PL stumbling block

Aston Villa and Birmingham fans in the Transfer Tavern are exciting by news a prodigal son could be returning to his home city this summer.

According to reports from The Birmingham Mail, the Midlands rivals are both interested in signing Oxford United winger Marvin Johnson, who has bagged five goals across all competitions this season and impressed during the League One outfit’s run to the fifth round of the FA Cup, where they ultimately lost to top flight side Middlesbrough.

Johnson is Birmingham-born and was once even offered a scholarship at St. Andrew’s. He spent time at Solihull Moors, Kidderminster Harriers and Hednesford Town before making his name in Scotland with Motherwell and signing for Oxford last summer.

Birmingham are said to have sent scouts to run the rule over him this season, whilst Villa are reportedly well aware of his credentials as well.

But it would be by no means a two-horse race between the two Birmingham-based Championship outfits to sign him this summer; Premier League sides are said to be keen on the left-sided winger, namely West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City, whilst he’s also attracted interest from Reading and Derby County.
