Long and Elyounoussi need to step up their game

Southampton couldn’t quite secure all three points against Burnley last time out at Turf Moor, as the Clarets netted the equaliser from the penalty spot in injury time at the end of the game.

The Saints will be desperate to improve on their recent results by turning one point into three, with relegation still being a worry at this moment in time.

Interestingly, Southampton will welcome Cardiff City to St Mary’s later on today in what could prove to be one of the biggest games left in their Premier League season. The Bluebirds managed to secure all three points against Bournemouth last time out, so they’ll be full of confidence heading into today’s game.

Of course, with the Saints struggling for inspiration last time out, this DUO need to prove that they deserve to be a part of Hasenhuttl’s plans…

SHANE LONG

Shane Long has spent most of his time on the substitutes’ bench in the current campaign, despite making 18 appearances in all competitions up until this point.

Danny Ings has kept him out of the side for long periods but the Englishman is now set to spend time out on the sidelines after picking up an injury last time out, so the Republic of Ireland international may get a run in the side.

So, having only managed to score one goal up until this point, it’s about time he proved himself on the field.

MOHAMED ELYOUNOUSSI

Mohamed Elyounoussi hasn’t lived up to expectations after joining the club in the summer transfer window.

The winger has struggled to secure regular minutes at St Mary’s in the current campaign, and when he does get his opportunity on the field he doesn’t make the most of it.

Therefore, he needs to give his all later on today if he gets the nod as he’s currently heading towards a summer exit if things don’t improve drastically.
