Luton Town Record Transfers

Luton Town are one of the highest-ranked English clubs to have spent such little on transfers in their history. The main reason for this is the divisions they have competed in over the past decade especially. The Hatters began the decade in the Conference Premier, and it was not until 2014 that they earnt promotion back up to League Two. From here they remained in the fourth tier of English football until 2017-18 when they won promotion to League One, and the following season they won successive promotions up to the Championship after being crowned League One champions.

The Hatters amazingly only have two transfers brought in for a fee of over £1m. Firstly, Adam Boyd joiend from Hartlepool United in 2006-07 for £1.35m, breaking their previous transfer arrival record of £810Th for Phil Gray in 1997-98. Boyd’s record fee stood for over ten years until the start of the current 2019-20 season when the Hatters signed Croation international goalkeeper from HNK Rijeka for just over £1.50m. The majority of Luton Town’s top 25 transfer arrivals are from the 1980/90s, and most are not recognisable by many.

On the other hand, Luton Town have made more of a name for themselves in terms of player sales over the past season. Up until 2005-06, a £4.05m fee for Curtis Davies from West Bromwich Albion was the clubs record transfer departure. This record was broken at the start of the current 2019-20 season however, as young English right-back, James Justin made his move to Premier League side Leicester City for just over £6m, making him the clubs highest ever sale.

This was closely followed by teammate and fellow right-back Jack Stacey who also left during the same season to join Premier League side Bournemouth for around £4m. Again, just like the Hatters arrivals, their departure fees are not notable among English football, and only 16 players have been sold for over £1m – the majority coming from the late 1990s/early 2000s.

Famous Luton Town Transfers

One of Luton Town’s most famous transfers was the signing of Paul Walsh from Charlton Athletic back in 1982. Walsh had a very successful few seasons playing for the Hatters, scoring 25 goals in 80 games, before making his move to Division One giants Liverpool in 1984.

Matthew Upson is another big name in English football who began his career at Luton Town before making his move to Arsenal for a £2m fee in 1998.
