Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern often have to contend with being linked with big money moves that eventually never materialise, but one rumour this year could see them make their best signing since Dele Alli.
Ever since Gareth Bale became a galactico in the summer of 2013 it feels as though Spurs have been looking for a pacy and technically gifted winger to fill his boots. Their first attempt, Erik Lamela, has struggled with injuries and failed to impress in a barely noticeable five years at White Hart Lane.
Then in January last season, Lucas Moura arrived from PSG for around £25M. However, in a case of history repeating itself, he failed to break into Pochettino’s starting XI and has been largely limited to appearances off the bench.
With the two South Americans struggling to make an impact, Spurs and Daniel Levy would be wise to offload both and attempt to bring in Anthony Martial, who seems to be surplus to Mourinho’s requirements at United.
Louis van Gaal signed Martial for £36M (with potential to rise to £58M) in 2015, making him the most expensive teenage transfer at the time. Now 22, Mourinho limited the Frenchman to just 18 Premier League starts last season and he completed 90 minutes just five times.
His lack of game time last season cost Martial a place in France’s World Cup squad so it is likely he will be keen to move in search of first-team football. Spurs could certainly offer him this and his pace and ability to run in behind defences would no doubt see him form a deadly strike force with Kane and Son.
The Mirror recently reported that United had set a price tag of £75M for Martial (who has a value of £58.5m on Transfermarkt), a fee that Spurs would be unlikely to pay, but having rejected new contract talks at Old Trafford he may just be able to force himself a perfect move to the Lilywhites.
