The Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are assessing their January transfer window and seeing if Jose Mourinho may have missed a trick.

The Red Devils captured the signature of Alexis Sanchez in a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan and the new number 7 has largely impressed in his few outings for the club, managing to follow up his own penalty to score on his Old Trafford debut.

However, looking back at the month, many of the fans in here feel that Mourinho and Ed Woodward could have done a little more. United trial local rivals City in the Premier League by some margin and the title is seemingly out of reach, so focus is turning to the cup competitions and building for next season.

With his notepad and pen at the ready, our landlord jots down a few of the mistakes that could cost United in the long run…

Lack of balance

The balance of the team has been a hot topic at the bar in recent months after some inconsistent performances a few months back. Mourinho partially addressed that by bringing in Sanchez to float across the frontline and his true impact remains to be seen.

However, on the right-hand side, there is no natural winger to play in that position. Much of the time it’s Lingard or Mata on the right, drifting in and allowing Antonio Valencia to overlap.

United have always had wingers in the side, much of the glory has been built on wingers getting it in the box and our regulars would like to see more of that.

Not selling

Fellaini is still holding the club to ransom and Blind was reportedly a deadline day target for Roma. With both not featuring much and Fellaini still arguing it out over wages and stipulations, this kind of thing could be toxic for the squad and United missed out on some money.

While the Red Devils don’t need to be overly concerned with balancing the books right now, failing to bring some money in after huge expenditure could have consequences in the future.

Furthermore, a couple of players with bad morale could seep through the whole of Old Trafford and derail any type of momentum they have going.
