Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford copped a fair amount of stick on social media after missing a sitter in the 3-0 win over Sheffield United.
Rashford provided the assist for Anthony Martial’s opening strike but couldn’t convert a chance to double Man United’s lead.
However, the 22-year-old’s miss shouldn’t detract from his influence on-and-off of the pitch in recent weeks. He paved the way for professional footballers to use their platforms for the greater good by helping to change government policy after leading an online campaign to support thousands of children over the summer holidays, and has raised more than £20m with the FareShare charity to feed vulnerable children.
Furthermore, the England international is the club’s joint-top scorer with Martial on 19 goals this season. He will no doubt be looking to continue his prolific form against Norwich City in the FA Cup tomorrow.
Speaking to Sky Sports, and re-posted by @utdreport, club legend Patrice Evra shared an insight into Rashford’s time under former boss Jose Mourinho.
Evra said: “I had a chat with Marcus when he was playing under Mourinho and he didn’t have a good time. A lot of clubs were coming and asking him to leave. I remember he said ‘Patrice, I will never leave United because it’s the best club in the world’.”
Unsurprisingly, loads of United fans gushed over Evra’s comments on social media, with some supporters tweeting that Rashford is “special” and a “future captain”. Another criticised Mourinho for his “unbelievable” actions.
