Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been the subject of plenty of speculation in recent days among the Red Devils’ fan base after missing the friendly at Old Trafford over the weekend.
Laurie Whitwell has revealed that Jones was absent from the inter-squad match after sustaining a minor injury via The Athletic (as relayed by @utdreport). The Englishman has been widely tipped to leave the Theatre of Dreams this summer as he is considered surplus to requirements by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Earlier this year, The Mirror reported that United are willing to let him go for roughly £12m when the transfer market opens. Newcastle manager Steve Bruce has previously admitted he is interested in signing the defender as he has bags of experience at the top levels of the game.

The 28-year-old has shockingly only played two games in the Premier League all season and is reportedly open to a move as he wants to play regular football again.
After arriving at Old Trafford from Blackburn in 2011, the centre-back has made 224 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring six goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions (Transfermarkt). His career has been blighted by a number of injuries that have mounted up over the years.
Nevertheless, he has fallen below the likes of club captain Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly in the pecking order and could be on his way out the door in the summer.
Unsurprisingly, loads of United fans slammed Jones on social media, with one supporter tweeting that he is “made of glass” while another sarcastically said that “in other news, water is wet” in light of the defender’s injury record. One fan even urged the club to “sell him already”.
