Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are reacting to the news of a further two players getting one-year contract deals.

Ashley Young and Daley Blind follow Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Luke Shaw in getting one-year deals to take them to 2019 with the club. Our regulars can’t weigh up if this is a good thing or not just yet. With Michael Carrick retiring, Zlatan Ibrahimovic possibly moving on and Fellaini looking likely to leave on a free, there seems to be plenty of movement in and around Old Trafford.

However, Jose Mourinho will be delighted to secure two further players for next season, as he bids to hunt down the pack to win his first Premier League title during his time at the Red Devils.

Indeed, the majority of the pub seems okay with the decision to extend the latest two’s contracts, but our landlord thinks that United have made a mistake and may come to regret the decision further down the line…

Daley Blind

Daley Blind nearly joined Roma in the January window and, that wouldn’t have been a bad move for the backup utility player. In recent times, Blind’s game time has been reduced to the covering role in case of injuries and suspensions, falling way down the pecking order after being a stalwart under Louis van Gaal.

Eventually, surely Blind will want to move on to play regular football and United will have a player on their hands with low morale, while just there to see out his contract. Which in turn could cause a bad vibe throughout the squad.

Ashley Young

Ashley Young has been at United for a number of years now and this season he seems to have been reinvigorated on the left-hand side. While Luke Shaw has struggled for form in the first half of the season, Young flourished, even making his way back into the England set-up.

However, while Shaw is slowly getting his form and fitness back, it can only mean Young will see his game time reduced, similar to Blind. Furthermore, Young is not getting any younger and to move him on in another year time may be difficult to do.
