Manchester United have made huge progress this season, and the summer ahead will play an important role in shaping their ambitions for next year.
The Red Devils finished their Premier League campaign on a high with a 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the AMEX Stadium yesterday, comfortably securing Champions League qualification with a third-place finish.
Michael Carrick’s resurgence of both the squad and performances at Old Trafford has rightfully earned him the permanent role at the club, signing an initial two-year deal with the option of a further 12 months if things continue positively.
Now that the managerial uncertainty has been resolved, the focus can shift towards identifying the right additions to strengthen the squad ahead of their return to European football and renewed pursuit of silverware next season and beyond.
It has been heavily reported that refreshing the midfield options at Carrick’s disposal will be the priority this summer, with several players linked to the club, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Atalanta’s Ederson.
However, fresh reports emerging from Italy have suggested that United could also look to further strengthen their attacking options during the transfer window.
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, Manchester United are among the clubs considering a move for AC Milan winger Rafael Leao.
The publication claims that the Red Devils have admired Leao for a long time and could face competition from Fenerbahce in the race for his signature this summer.
The Italian outlet also reported earlier this week that Leao’s asking price has been set at £43m.
Should Man United sign Rafael Leao?
There is no doubt that United have improved drastically over the last 12 months, but maintaining that consistency and momentum will become far more difficult with a congested fixture schedule that includes Champions League football.
The arrivals of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko last summer revitalised the attacking threat at Old Trafford, but adding further depth and European experience could still prove to be a smart move.
Over 31 appearances this season, the 26-year-old – once described as giving off “Ronaldinho vibes” by TNT Sports pundit Owen Hargreaves – has scored 10 goals and registered three assists.
Leao also boasts significant experience at the highest level in Europe, tallying up 30 Champions League appearances alongside six goals and seven assists in the competition.
While his numbers in front of goal are not extraordinary, the Portuguese winger offers consistency, flair and moments of individual brilliance that could make him an appealing option for United this summer.
With that in mind, securing Leao for a relatively modest fee could represent excellent business for the Red Devils.
His experience, versatility and quality in attacking areas would provide Carrick with greater depth, while also adding another proven performer capable of influencing the biggest fixtures as United continue their rebuild towards competing for major honours once again.
