Things haven’t been great for our Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern of late, following a bit of a rocky patch that saw them fall to third in the league over the Christmas period. Indeed, our resident Red Devils aren’t happy to say the least.
Mourinho is cutting a frustrated and angry figure of late, moanings of money spent and injuries to his team have been a regular in his press conferences. Perhaps unsurprisingly, recent reports suggest the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach is on a collision course with those behind the scenes at Old Trafford.
While at the start of the season, things couldn’t have been going any better for the Portuguese man and in reality, United are having their best post-Fergie season. If it wasn’t for Citys unbelievable first half of the season, many of our punters think that the title race would be a lot closer than it currently is.
However, many of our local United fans believe it’s only a matter of time before the Mourinho bomb goes off with many thinking he’ll be gone by the end of the season. That leaves Ed Woodward with a mighty shortlist to chalk up, just in case.
Our landlord takes a look at three possible replacements for Mourinho…
Mauricio Pochettino
The Spurs man would be a popular choice among the United faithful, having made quite an impression during his stay in England. Firstly with Southampton and currently with his young and energetic Tottenham side, his faith in youth and attacking play would make him an instant hit inside Old Trafford.
United have always been big on giving the youngsters a chance to express themselves, following an 80-year tradition of having a youth player named in every matchday squad and it seems the Argentine is in a similar mould to Sir Alex when it comes to being able to find the diamond in the rough.
Diego Simeone
Diego Simeone is a similar mould to Chelsea boss Antonio Conte but adding a lot more fire into the equation, alongside that bringing a ‘us versus them’ mentality much like Mourinho tries to instil in many of his teams.
‘El Cholo’ has hit some pretty impressive highs during his time at Atletico Madrid, reaching two Champions League finals and winning La Liga and the Europa league makes his rising stock quite high.
Another hit among the United fans with the type of passion he’d bring to the team.
Laurent Blanc
The former United centre-half enjoyed a very successful time with French giants Paris St.Germain and was very unfortunate not to achieve more with his French national side.
A return to Old Trafford would be welcomed by the United faithful having known the type of football that’s to be expected after playing under Sir Alex, and with his managerial experience at France’s top level, he would bring something a little different to the Premier League.
