There is drama here in the Football Transfer Tavern as it is claimed by the Daily Mirror that Rio Ferdinand could well be set to sign a new contract at Manchester United.
The defender has recently retired from international football and has pledged his future to United – the club he feels have really supported him through thick and thin and now wants to see out the twilight of his career at Old Trafford, something that David Moyes is more than happy to allow.
This season the 34-year-old may not have played as much as in the prime of his career but the fact remains that he is a top class player and the presence the player brings to the dressing room is something that David Moyes is set on keeping at the club.
It had been rumoured that Ferdinand could well sign one final lucrative deal in the Far East or in North America yet the defender is set to take a cut in his wages in order to stay at United and help steady the ship after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson and arrival of David Moyes. Not to mention the fact that his experience is vital when trying to nurture players like Jonny Evans and Phil Jones.
