Manchester United: Club willing to battle Arsenal for Boubakary Soumaré

Boubakary Soumaré

Manchester United continue to find themselves linked to players across the globe, and it seems they still want to add more midfielders to their squad as they are reportedly interested in a Ligue 1 star.

According to FootMercato, Arsenal are reportedly favourites to acquire Boubakary Soumare, but two English clubs are interested, including Manchester United.

Italian side AC Milan have also made an enquiry too, but whoever makes an offer will have a lot of work to do to try and tempt Ligue 1 side Lille to allow Soumare to depart.

The 21 year-old, who is valued at £22.05 million, per Transfermarkt, was a product of the academy at Paris Saint-Germain, but since moving to Lille, he has finally been given his opportunity to prove himself at the top level.

He has now made 70 appearances for the club, scoring one goal, but he is more of a defensive player, which could be the exact type of player United need to be thinking about. This is due to the fact that Nemanja Matic, who is typically playing as the main defensive midfielder, is getting older, and in order for Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to flourish, they need that one player in the middle to help out the defence.

Therefore someone like Soumare could be an ideal future replacement for Matic, however it is worth wondering whether they should spend probably a big fee on him when they already have Scott McTominay at the club.

When you compare the defensive stats of the two, the Scotsman averages more tackles (1.6 compared to 1.1), interceptions (1.1 compared to 0.8) and clearances (1.2 compare to 0.8), per WhoScored.

This highlights that it would probably be better for the Red Devils to save their funds for other positions as they actually have good depth in that position.
