Loads of Manchester United fans have been remembering a skilful move from Angel Gomes after the club’s official account posted footage of his heroics in a Europa League clash at Old Trafford.
Gomes has been subject to rampant transfer speculation as he has been starved of opportunities under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in recent months. The 19-year-old has made only six appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions this season, scoring four goals and creating two assists for the development squad (Transfermarkt).
United tweeted a video of the youngster bamboozling the defence during the 2-1 Europa League defeat to Astana last November. Gomes controlled a misplaced pass before deftly turning in the style of Johan Cruyff and passing the ball into the box. Solskjaer’s side went on to lose to the Kazakh club in the European competition but this was merely a testing ground for the young squad as the Red Devils had already qualified for the last 32 (BBC Sport).
The Norwegian has used a number of academy products throughout the season so far, including Scott McTominay and Brandon Williams, yet the England under-20 international has struggled to gain a place in the team despite his obvious skills. Ed Woodward will be aware other Premier League rivals are monitoring the teenager’s availability, as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are poised to make a move in the summer (Mirror).
As expected, loads of United fans drooled over the highlight of the “born talent” on social media, with one fan dubbing Gomes a “baller” and another adding he is “better than Lingard”.
