Manchester United are considering a move for Schalke’s Rabbi Matondo as a back-up option for Jadon Sancho, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Football reporter Richard Fay revealed United have been keeping tabs on Matondo over the course of the season so far, and the teenager is viewed as more cost-efficient if Borussia Dortmund out-price the Red Devils for Sancho in the summer.
Ed Woodward tried to buy the Englishman last year but ended up signing Daniel James for £15m from Swansea City instead. Sources told the outlet the board regard the 19-year-old in the same ‘low-risk buy’ bracket as his Welsh compatriot.
The Royal Blues are looking to sell a number of their first team stars to try and make up for the lost revenues when football was suspended in light of the ongoing pandemic.
Ever since he arrived at the Signal Iduna Park from Manchester City for £7m back in 2017, Sancho has shined for Lucien Favre’s side, scoring 14 goals and creating 15 assists in 23 appearances in the Bundesliga this season (WhoScored).
After months of transfer speculation, it seems Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is prepared to find another solution if he cannot prise the England international from Germany before the start of next season.
Unsurprisingly, many United fans slammed the transfer link to Matondo, with one fan lamenting he is just “another Dan James,” and another adding the situation is a “disaster.”

Whats the point with a backup? We already have Daniel James, we need a world class starter right now. Sancho please.
